Georgia Craftsman of North Georgia

We’re thrilled to share one of our older projects—a stunning solid red oak door! Built with precision and care, this door features rich, natural grain patterns and a durable finish that enhances any entryway. Responsibly harvested red oak from local sources, shaped, milled, built, then paired with festive holiday decor, including a vibrant wreath and a beautifully lit tree, it’s the perfect blend of craftsmanship and seasonal charm.
We’re excited to share the story behind this stunning red oak door! The lumber was cured for over a year, sourced from a 75-year-old tree that fell during a storm. One of our cutters offered us the wood, and we eagerly accepted. We cut the logs into 10-foot sections, helping our donators clear the remaining debris as a thank-you for the free material. Back at our mill, we slabbed the wood into 2.5-inch-thick pieces and stacked them in our solar kiln to dry.
Initially, we didn’t know the wood’s final purpose, but we later received a commission to craft this red oak door for a lake house in the Lake Arrowhead area. After drying, we milled the lumber further with a planer and jointer to ensure smooth edges and a tight fit for the seams. Crafting the door took about a week of cutting the parts, followed by another week of assembly. The finished door weighed around 300 lbs and required teamwork to move!
We let the assembled door cure for a few days, then stained it with the customers’ chosen Minwax Red Mahogany color. Once we confirmed it was ready, we scheduled an installation appointment. Removing the old door and installing the new one with heavy-duty bearing hinges went smoothly, fitting perfectly into the existing opening. The result? A door that opens and closes like a dream, with a satisfying thud that delighted the customers.
Throughout the process, the customers were wonderful—truly the nicest people to work with. We’re proud of this project and grateful for the opportunity!
